Tabletop RPG system, setting and a digital character-creation tool
Soulgrave is a dark fantasy world I started building in 2025. Every character carries the Rot, the corruption I chose to make physical: the dark part of each person made flesh. Over time the project grew from a tabletop campaign into its own rules system, a full setting manual, and a web tool for building characters.
I picked the eight-sided die because almost nobody builds a system around it — and from there, eight became the throughline for the whole design.
I picked the d8 because almost nobody uses it. Eight repeats everywhere: eight attributes, eight points of Rot, rolls using as many d8s as your attribute. Rolling between five and eight is a success.
A one subtracts a success; stacked, they give you disadvantage. An eight grants advantage: bank it for the next roll or spend it on aspects tied to your race.
Reaching eight points of Rot means you die with no cure. I designed the game for one to three sessions: every roll is a choice of how much to risk.
No generic elves or dwarves. Every race in Levandor has its own logic, culture, and place in the world.
The manual is laid out at eighty percent: the cover, race and location lore, and the world map are already locked in.
None of these mechanics landed right on the first version — this is what I iterated on the most at the table.
I wrote every race, the combat system, magic and character creation for the manual. Since I'm also a UX/UI designer, I didn't want building a character to depend on reading the whole manual — so I designed the full flow and took it to production myself.
From the first worldbuilding to the stage it's at today.
What's left is closing out the game master guidance and finishing the stat blocks for the rest of the bestiary. I'm now taking the game to tabletop clubs to keep refining it with new people.
"Simple rules don't take depth away from a game — most of the time, they give it depth."
This project pushed me to prioritize originality: designing my own creatures and mechanics instead of starting from familiar references.
The project already has maps, art for each race, special characters and a character sheet — plus the laid-out manual. We're also producing video with Manu to show the world on social media.
Soulgrave also works as an IP: it's the base of the board games Grubbits, Guards of Levandor and Ruins of Drownhall.
